FUN FUNGI: HOW TO MAKE MUSHROOM SPORE PRINTS WITH YOUR KIDS

Making spore prints with mushrooms is an engaging and hands-on activity that provides a wonderful opportunity for children and families to explore the fascinating world of fungi. By following these simple steps, you can embark on a captivating journey of discovery, observing the intricate patterns and colors of mushroom spores and gaining insights into the reproductive processes of these unique organisms. It's a great way to spark curiosity, encourage scientific inquiry, and deepen your understanding and appreciation of nature's remarkable diversity.

But first, what is a spore print?

A mushroom spore print is a method of collecting and observing the spores that are released from the gills or pores on the underside of a mushroom cap. By placing the cap on a piece of paper or other surface, the spores will fall and create a unique pattern that can be used to identify the species of mushroom.  Mycologists (scientists who study fungi) use spore prints as an important tool for identifying different mushroom species. By examining the size, shape, color, and pattern of the spores on the print, they can compare it to known spore prints in databases and field guides to help identify the mushroom species. Spore prints are also used to help distinguish between similar-looking mushroom species, which can be important for safety reasons as some mushrooms can be toxic or deadly.

Follow these simple steps to create your own spore prints:

  1. Collect mature mushrooms: Go on a mushroom hunt and collect mature mushrooms that are firm and have an intact cap. It's important to collect different species of mushrooms to see the variety of spore colors.

  2. Cut off the stems: Using a sharp knife, carefully cut off the stems of the mushrooms close to the cap.

  3. Place the caps on paper: Place the mushroom caps on a piece of paper with the gills facing down. Use black or white paper to make it easier to see the spore prints.

  4. Cover and wait: Cover the mushrooms with a bowl or jar to protect them from any air currents. Wait at least 12 hours, but preferably 24 hours, for the spore prints to form.

  5. Observe the spore prints: Remove the bowl or jar and carefully lift up the mushroom caps to reveal the spore prints. Observe the colors and patterns of the spores.

  6. Preserve the spore prints: To preserve the spore prints, spray them with a fixative such as hairspray or clear lacquer.

Remember, never eat wild mushrooms unless you are absolutely certain they are safe to consume. Enjoy the beauty and wonder of mushrooms safely and responsibly.

Creating spore prints with mushrooms is a fascinating and educational activity for children and families that allows us to appreciate the intricate and mysterious world of fungi. By observing the unique patterns and colors of spores, we can deepen our understanding and connection with these vital organisms in our ecosystem. So next time you come across a mushroom, take a moment to appreciate its beauty and consider making a spore print to unlock its secrets.
